Prices in South Africa

In general the prices for goods and services are on a similar level as e.g. in Germany. For us South Africans the standard of living is not as glorious as it used to be. As an example, in 1984 a good bottle of South African white wine was available for R2.50. The same bottle will cost R25.00 and more. Well, there are not many people here who earn 10 times more now compared to 1984.

For visitors it's a different story. Today, August 27th 1998 the value of the Rand compared with three major currencies is as follows:

1US Dollar = Rand 6.50
1GB Pound = Rand 10.70
1 Deutsche Mark = Rand 3.65
